New Year, New You: 5 Signs It’s Time to Address Your Fibroids

Uterine fibroids affect most women by age 50, but many women live with them for years before seeking care. Board-certified OB/GYN Daniel S. Kushner, MD, with offices in Queens and White Plains, New York, is here to help you understand your symptoms and offer solutions that fit your life.

One of the most important services we offer is education about women’s health issues. Often, the diagnosis and treatment options for fibroids are far less scary than they may seem at first. Today’s blog explains five clear-cut signs that it’s time to take care of your fibroid symptoms in 2026.

1. Heavy or long periods

The most common symptom of fibroids is heavy bleeding (soaking more than one tampon or pad per hour). Periods lasting longer than seven days, regardless of flow, are another common sign of fibroids. Many women experience both a heavy flow and long periods.

Another sign related to heavy bleeding is anemia. In rare cases, some women may even develop life-threatening anemia. If your periods are disrupting your work, sleep, or energy levels, it’s time to see Dr. Kushner.

2. Pelvic pain or pressure

Fibroids take up space in your uterus and lower abdomen, especially when they’re large or when they develop in groups. This can create a constant sensation of fullness, heaviness, or pressure. This symptom often develops gradually, making it easy to ignore, at least until it progresses.

Some strong indicators that your pelvic pressure needs attention include a sudden increase in the pain, discomfort during intercourse, or difficulty getting comfortable when sitting or exercising.

3. Changes in urination

Frequent urination or difficulty fully emptying your bladder are lesser-known symptoms that can occur when a fibroid presses against the bladder. This can be more common with larger fibroids or those that are growing in size.

If you find yourself making way too many trips to the bathroom or waking at night to urinate multiple times, it could potentially be a fibroid that’s easily treatable.

4. Chronic bloating

Many women think that chronic bloating is related to the foods they eat, their menstrual cycle, or gaining a few pounds. But in many cases, fibroids are the culprit. Fibroids can grow big enough to cause belly swelling and even distension, even if your weight hasn't changed.

5. Trouble getting pregnant

Fibroids don't always affect fertility, but in up to 3% of cases, they're the sole cause. In many other cases, they may be a contributor to infertility or the source of recurrent miscarriage.

If you're having trouble conceiving or have experienced recent miscarriages with no clear cause, you owe it to yourself to find out whether it's fibroids.

Dr. Kushner and our empathetic team of women's health specialists believe that there’s no better time to prioritize your health and face your fibroid fears. If any of these signs are familiar, we’re ready to help you get to the bottom of the problem and get you relief.
